Forklift Job Description
Narrow Reach forklifts are most often used in product movement in many warehouses. This particular machine is an excellent option because most items nowadays are packaged in a way that makes it much too heavy for a person to pick them up effectively or safely without the help of some kind of industrial equipment.
Job Description
A forklift operator has the important task of safely moving objects from one location to another in a secure way. They use the forklifts controls and toggles in order to execute accurate movements and lift and move cargo efficiently. Lift truck drivers normally unload shipping containers, trailers, trains or other types of storage units. The forklift driver has the extra job of performing regular checks on the machinery so as to ensure it is safe and capable to perform the required job.
Personal Qualities
Forklift drivers must have basic writing and reading skills. The forklift driver should be fit physically and can carry 30 pounds. They must be physically able to use a forklift; thus, they need the physical ability of using both arms, both hands and both feet. The driver of the forklift must ideally be able to stand for an 8 hour shift. In nearly all work environments, they would be entitled to a half-hour lunch break and two short coffee breaks during the day. It is very important that the driver of the forklift not be prone to reckless driving or rage of any sort.
Training
Normally, forklift training is done on the job. This training includes control training and safety training, which is done through a series of videos, and tests. A performance test will also be conducted on the lift truck. When the tests have been successfully completed, a license could be issued. This license should be renewed based on state and provincial laws and based on shop procedures. If you get the chance to finish your lift truck training on the job, it is a great idea and it is a different skill you can add to your resume.
Job Locations
In bigger establishments such as manufacturing or retail facilities, lift truck drivers may work in a warehouse department. Lift truck operators may also work in other fields, depending on the businesses needs. Forklifts are extremely versatile pieces of equipment which could be found on logging sites and construction sites in addition to in nearly all shipping and receiving facilities, ports and train yards.
